The refurbished laptop market has matured significantly. Buying refurbished can get you far more performance for your budget than buying new at the same price. But quality varies enormously.
What "refurbished" means
Refurbished laptops are previously used machines that have been returned, tested, repaired if needed, cleaned, and resold. Ex-corporate lease machines are often excellent — they were typically high-spec business laptops (ThinkPad, HP EliteBook) that received professional maintenance and have several years of useful life remaining.
Grades to look for
Grade A — near-perfect cosmetic condition, fully functional. Grade B — minor cosmetic marks (light scratches, small scuffs) but fully functional. Good value. Grade C — visible cosmetic damage. Only buy if the price reflects the condition and all functionality is confirmed.
What to check before buying
- Battery health (ideally 70%+ capacity remaining)
- Whether any components have been replaced (drives, screens, keyboards)
- Warranty offered (a reputable refurbisher should offer at least 90 days)
- The seller's return policy
Where to buy
Reputable UK refurbishers include Tier 1 IT (Amazon), Laptops Direct, and Back Market. Avoid private sellers on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree unless you can test the machine thoroughly first.
