Common MacBook Problems and Whether They're Worth Repairing

MacBooks are excellent machines, but they do have their share of common faults. Here's what to look out for and whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Darren repairs both Windows laptops and MacBooks across Okehampton and Devon. MacBooks are generally well-built machines, but certain models have well-documented issues that Apple has acknowledged.

Common MacBook problems

Butterfly keyboard failure (2015โ€“2019 MacBook Pro/Air)

Apple's ultra-thin butterfly keyboard mechanism was notoriously unreliable โ€” keys would stop registering with minimal provocation. Apple ran a free replacement programme for affected models. If your MacBook has this keyboard and is within the programme years, check Apple's website for eligibility.

Screen delamination

Some MacBook screens suffer from an anti-reflective coating that begins to peel off, causing cloudy or smeared-looking areas. This is a cosmetic issue that becomes progressively worse over time.

Staingate (2012โ€“2015 MacBooks)

A specific version of delamination affecting older Retina MacBooks, where the anti-reflective coating rubs off in patches, particularly around the area where the keyboard contacts the screen when closed.

Swollen battery

Lithium batteries swell with age. A swollen MacBook battery is a safety hazard โ€” it can cause the trackpad to stop clicking, the bottom case to bow outwards, and in extreme cases, can damage other components. Replace it promptly.

Fan running constantly

Constant fan noise usually indicates either a clogged vent requiring a clean, or a runaway process consuming CPU. Check Activity Monitor to identify any processes using excessive CPU.

Is a MacBook worth repairing?

Given the high cost of new MacBooks, repair is often excellent value. A screen replacement or SSD upgrade on a MacBook that's otherwise in good condition can extend its life by several years at a fraction of the cost of a replacement.
