A well-targeted upgrade can extend a computer's useful life by 3โ5 years for a fraction of the cost of replacement. But not all upgrades offer good value. Here's how to make the right call.
Upgrades that transform performance
SSD upgrade (from HDD) โ The single best value upgrade available. Transforms boot times and general responsiveness. Worth doing on any machine up to 8 years old. Cost: ยฃ60โยฃ100. RAM upgrade (4GB to 8GB or 8GB to 16GB) โ Dramatically reduces slowdowns when multitasking. Worth doing if RAM is upgradeable and under 8GB. Cost: ยฃ25โยฃ50.
Upgrades with limited value
Processor upgrade โ Usually impossible in laptops (soldered) and rarely cost-effective in desktops unless you're keeping the motherboard. Graphics card โ Only viable in desktop PCs with PCIe slots. Can be excellent value if the rest of the system is solid. Battery replacement โ Worth doing if the machine is otherwise good. Restores proper mobility. Cost: ยฃ40โยฃ70.
When no upgrade is worth it
If your machine is over 10 years old, has an old processor (pre-Core i5, pre-Ryzen), or has multiple failing components, the money is better spent on a replacement. Darren will tell you honestly when this is the case.
