Most people use their browser with default settings that leave them more exposed than necessary. These changes take minutes and meaningfully improve security.
Settings for all browsers
Enable Safe Browsing โ In Chrome, go to Settings โ Privacy and Security โ Security and select Enhanced Protection. In Firefox, it's called Enhanced Tracking Protection and is on by default. Block pop-ups โ Should be enabled by default, but check Settings โ Site Settings โ Pop-ups and redirects (Chrome). Enable automatic updates โ Your browser should update automatically, but verify this is enabled. Running an outdated browser is a significant security risk. Review installed extensions โ Go to your browser's extension manager and remove anything you don't recognise or no longer use. Browser extensions have extensive access to your activity.
Consider a password manager extension
Bitwarden (free) is an excellent browser extension that generates and stores strong unique passwords for every site, autofilling them safely. This is one of the highest-impact security improvements available.
Using a privacy-focused DNS
Changing your DNS server to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) can improve both privacy and browsing speed compared to your ISP's default DNS. This is changed in your router or network adapter settings.
