Twenty-five years is a long time in an industry that changes as fast as computing. Darren has repaired everything from beige box Windows 98 machines to the latest Apple Silicon MacBooks. Some things change completely. Some things stay exactly the same.
The lessons that matter
Backup, backup, backup
In 25 years, the most heartbreaking conversations are the ones where someone has lost irreplaceable photos or years of work because they had no backup. Hard drives fail. Always. It's not a question of if โ it's when. The people who are prepared for it lose nothing. The people who aren't lose everything. Set up a backup today, before you need it.
Most slow computers don't need replacing
The single most common conversation Darren has is with someone convinced their computer is beyond help when in reality, an SSD upgrade will transform it. Manufacturers want you to buy new. Your computer very often doesn't need replacing โ it needs the right upgrade.
The problem is usually simpler than you think
In most cases, the dramatic-sounding symptom (Blue Screen of Death, won't start, lost all files) has a specific, fixable cause. Years of experience pattern-matches symptoms to causes quickly. What seems catastrophic to the owner is often a routine repair.
Never panic about your data
People believe that a laptop that won't start means all their data is gone. It almost never does. The drive (where your files live) and the system (what runs the computer) are separate. A computer can fail completely and the data can still be fully recoverable.
The most expensive thing is waiting
A clicking hard drive seen immediately can often be fixed with data intact. The same drive three weeks later, after the owner hoped it would sort itself out, may have failed completely. Symptoms of hardware failure should never be ignored.
Cheap computers cost more in the long run
The cheapest laptops use lower quality components, have poor build quality, and break sooner. A quality machine bought once, properly maintained and upgraded, will outlast three budget laptops and cost less overall.
Simple maintenance prevents most emergencies
Annual cleaning of the vents, keeping Windows updated, maintaining a backup, and not ignoring warning signs prevents the vast majority of the emergency repairs Darren sees. Prevention is always cheaper than cure.
